In 1930, the Bata company exported 1,000 pairs of shoes to the island; a significant increase in exports in 1933 (17,000 pairs) was a sign of a strong position on the local market. In 1937, 2 Bata stores were in operation here, their number had grown to 3 by 1947. In the following decades, Bata Shoe Company Barbados Ltd. (1978) based in Bridgetown was operating here (1992).
